The Relationship Between Back Pain and the Weather

Changes in the environment also affect the human body. One such environmental factor can be the weather, to which some people react more sensitively. Regarding the spine, the following characteristics apply to warm and cold fronts:

  • Warm front:

During prolonged warm front effects, old fractures and scars may become more sensitive, the pulse rate increases, blood pressure decreases, and inflammations intensify.

  • Cold front:

After the passage of a cold front, an increase in joint pain, inflammations, and rheumatic pain has been observed.

  • Why is back pain more common when cold weather arrives?

Due to the cold - like all materials - tissues also contract. Their size and volume change - even if only slightly. This can cause muscle contraction, which may increase joint pressure. The joint surfaces come closer together, leading to the appearance of symptoms and back pain.

We cannot do much against weather changes, but we can strengthen our body and increase our resistance. For this, regular exercise, a vitamin-rich diet, sufficient fluid intake, and stress relief are important. During the winter period, using a good back warmer or occasionally visiting a pleasant thermal water pool can help a lot.
