Seating at home

Sitting puts strain on our spine in every situation, so it is important to learn and apply correct sitting posture during meals, work, entertainment, or rest. When sitting, our pelvis usually tilts backward, resulting in the lumbar curve becoming convex instead of concave, and our head moves forward, thus altering the double S curvature, leading to a slouched posture. In contrast, the goal is to maintain the spine's physiological curves even in these situations.

Preferably, provide each family member with a chair of appropriate height.

If we can rest our forearms on the table while keeping our back straight and shoulders relaxed, then the chair-to-table height ratio is appropriate. Our feet should be supported on the ground, and for children, we also recommend a footrest or stool under their feet.

To prevent slouching while sitting, it is advisable to sit on a wedge cushion, which tilts the pelvis forward and thus creates the lumbar lordosis. This makes it easier to sit with a straight back and lifted chest.

  • Resting, watching TV

When we comfortably settle into our favorite armchair with a good book or sit down to watch TV, we usually adopt a reclined, almost semi-lying posture, which places a great strain on our spine because the natural double S-curve changes in this position.

What can we do? Sit upright and support our lower back with a cushion. Not on the seat surface, but a little higher, at the lumbar area, place the cushion at the curve, which prevents this area from rounding and thus helps prevent a slouched posture. The cylindrical cushion is excellent for this purpose!

  • In front of the computer

It is best if we can work or browse the internet at home sitting on a wedge cushion at a desk, as we do in the office, but often we just sit in an armchair with the laptop on our lap and work that way. The problem with this is that, as described above, we adopt a slouched posture, and the low position of the laptop even increases this posture. If we still want to use it this way, then we should also support our lower back with a cylindrical cushion. Place the laptop at a height where we can bend our elbows at a right angle and support our wrists on the laptop while keeping our shoulders relaxed.
